Hammersmith Bridge Works Nearly 3 years ago we had to close Hammersmith Bridge to carry out urgent repairs. We re-opened it as promised at the end of Autumn 1999. On the 1st of June 2000 the bridge had to be closed again due to an explosion on the southern side of the bridge, which caused significant damage to the structure. We found defective surfacing which had to be replaced and at the same time we took the opportunity of repairing the damage caused by a boat colliding with the bridge.
